Question 4 - Jessica

Question 3: What have you learnt from your audience feedback? (Jessica)

Our target audience was western teenage girls, we determined this firstly by looking at other similar artists in music videos, CD covers and advertisements.  These similar artists include, Beyonce, Shakira, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj.

By looking at the audiences for these artists we determined our possible target audience.

We also conducted a questionnaire that ten people took part of, the results we came out with where not as expected, the results suggested that we were targeting a niche audience, which is incorrect. This was a result of faulty research, we did not question a wide enough range of people to determine our actual target audience so we went off the typical audience for the above artists. Although we did find out what makes people want to watch a music video of the same genre. This being outfits, make-up and fast paced editing.

I set out to appeal to this target audience throughout my project through the mise-en-scene, editing and cinematography. I used the typical conventions of a R&B/Hip-Hop music video to familliarise the consumers with this particular genre of music video. These being: fast paced editing, excessive make-up, skimpy outfits and plenty of close ups.
For example:

This music shows the typical conventions for this genre.

The initial audience research wasnt accurate but helped guide us in our planning and decision making as it made us realise that we needed to target a wider audience by making the music video very likable.

In the most recent audience feedback questionnaires we got feedback from over 20 people, this is an example of the questions and answers:

This was a positive set of feedback from the lot we got. Some examples of bad audience feedback are:
- The artist is the wrong ethnicity
- The dancer doesn't work/fit with the genre (I agree with this)
- The lip synching is slightly out

Things people particularly enjoyed was the silhouette effect and the vast range of shots used.

The main thing i disagree with is that the artist was the wrong ethnicity as there are many while singers in the R&B/HipHop genre, for example  - Ke$ha, Lady Soverign, Iggy Azalea.
